Town Manager Updates
Wednesday 7/30/2025
Good Morning, Culver. I want to share some information concerning a recent post concerning the use of golf carts along the sidwalk along State road 10. The Town of Culver prohibits the operation of golf carts on its sidewalks and paths.
During the public discussion of the 7/24 council meeting, there was a request made to amend the existing ordinance making an exception for the sidewalk along State road 10 from Maple Ridge to Lake Shore. Subsequent to this meeting, the Council has not made a directive to consider this request.
Over the past few weeks (especially last night), residents have reached out to me with concerns about pedestrian traffic and golf carts in town. Yes, our police enforce regulations, but the best means of maintaining safety would come from our residents and visitors following the town's ordinances/laws...such as the speed limit in town.
Please remember to be mindful of children and pedestrians as you go through town and near trail entrances. Be courteous when driving a golf cart and pull over to let vehicles around you. Do not roll through stop signs and be aware of intersections such as Lake Shore and Academy. Most important, stay within the posted speed limits.
Thank you,
Kevin

Good afternoon. I want to sya thank you for the feedback the Town recieved from last night's public hearing on the proposed water rate increase. To summarize, concerns centered around understanding the "Fire Protection" charge and the Town was asked to explore further a posiible model that is an incremental rate increase over time. The Town Council recommended addressing these two concerns and will reconvene during the August 14th meeting to discuss and plans to have 1st reading for the Rate Increase Ordinance on the agenda. The following links provide information concernin gthe proposed increase in water rates:
Prior to the Council Meeting, the council met in a work session to discuss current and upcoming town projects. A list of these projects and future considerations can be viewed through the following link:

Good morning. Due to the
water shut down on the south side of town yesterday, Culver residents may
experience discolored water this morning. This is similar to when we flush
hydrants. Please let water run at a faucet or outside spicket for a few minutes
until the water runs clear.
Just a reminder to those with
property south of Batabano, you are under a boil advisory until further notice
until we complete a required testing process. Please follow guidelines found
here: https://www.cdc.gov/water-emergency/about/drinking-water-advisories-an-overview.html#cdc_health_safety_special_topic_how-boil-water-advisory.
If you have any questions, please let me know at kdanti@townofculver.org
Thank you for your patience.

Good Morning, Culver. I hope everyone will have a chance to enjoy the upcoming weekend as the weather forcast indicates it will be a great time to visit the lake and beach. I encourage the town to contact me if they have an idea or issue. I have valued the feedback concerning the "tree massacre". Emerson and I discussed Monday possibly contacting a representative from NIPSCO to have a public information session. By the way, if you not met our IU Resilience Fellow, Emerson, be sure to make time to meet her and learn about her program and the work we intend to do this summer and fall wiith the Tree Commission. She has office hours at Culver Coffee Company on Mandays this month. Stay tuned, she will be at lakefest and will also be going through town reaching out to people.
Several projects are under way in town and we have several on the horizon. The Jefferson/Slate/Cass sidewalk is close to completion. The Phase 3 trail project between Academy Road and State Road 10 is ongoing. I would remind individuals that the path is not officially open and will golf carts will not be allowed on this path...at any time.
Have a great day!
Tuesday 6/10
Good Morning, Culver. I want to remind residents the Town Council will be meeting this Thursday 6/12, 6:30 at the Town Hall.
I wanted to send out a special thanks to all those involved in the care of our turtles. Culver is a town built on our relationship with Lake Maxinkuckee and its natural resources. I appreciate our residents openly sharing their concerns for our trees, wildlife, and environment. Towards that end, I want to specifically thank Cuver's Tree Commission as well as the Lake Maxinkuckee Environmental Fund.
As a reminder, Emerson Wells will be at the Culver Coffee Company holding office hours at 11:00 am - 1:00 pm EST: 6/9, 6/16, 6/23, & 6/30.
Tuesday 6/3
Good Afternoon. Bob Porter and I wanted to share the most recent water quality report. You can find this information at the following link Town of Culver Water Quality Report.
Monday 6/2
Good afternoon Culver. I have been away from Culver last week on vacation. I wanted to update you on several matters that happened during my absence.
First, we have had some reports of racoons in the park and some damage to boat seats on the pier. I want to remind individuals with boats not to leave food on boats as well as to remove valuables from the boats while storing them to prevent theft...by humans not the racoons.
Secondly, Emerson Wells our fellow from the IU Resilency Program, has arrived in Culver and was able to be at our Tree Commission Meeting last week. She conveyed that she appreciated meeting many of you and will be hosting several public outreach events and will be having "office hours" to meet one on one regarding trees in Culver. Emerson will be an amazing resource for data and guidance to develop a comprehensive plan for the future maintenance, planting, and removal of trees within our community.
Emerson did share that there was some questions regarding the amount the Town of Culver spends on funding for tree care and maintenance. Accoording to the Indiana Tree City Guidelines, a muncipality should spend at least $2.00 per capita to be consider a Tree City USA. Currently, the Town of Culver has budgeted $30,000 for the maintenance, removal and planting of trees ($15000 for removal and $15000 for maintenance and planting). Given an estimated full-time population of 1200, that would suggest that Culver budgets $25 per capita for trees maintenance, removal, and care.
NOTICE:

Cohort- Urban Green Infrastructure project as part of

Republic Waste Service sent the Town the following reminder:
Good morning!
This is just a reminder that Monday, May 26th is
Memorial Day. We will be operating on a day delay next week.
A reminder that water rates and sewer rates will be discussed during tonight's Town Council Meeting at 6:30.
Monday 5/19
Good morning. I know it was dusty in Culver (and all of Northwest Indiana) during this past weekend. There was liitle that the developers at THe Dunes could have done to prevent the dust this weekend. However, several people did express concrn that they have not seen the water trucks running these past few weeks. I did reach out and communicate it t the developers.
We have hired summer help at the street department who will be mowing and driving through town to remove sticks/limbs. With the recent storm, I am sure there will be plenty of work. The Town does ask not to pile them in the street if possible.
There is current work on Cass street near Slate on a new path as well as replacing existing sidewalk on Slate and Jefferson Streets. The Town does not anticipate disruption in traffic. Please reach out woth questions.
I invite the Town to attend the upcoming Council Meeting on Thursday 5/22. See agenda
Thursday 5/15
I hope all is well. Culver Academy alumni will be in town this weekend so expect increase traffic in town. With summer approaching and people returning, the Town has already sold over 529 Golf Cart permits. Each year, we remind individuals that there are rules regulations in place to ensure the safety of our residents. The use of a golf cart within Town is a privelege that can be revoked if rules are not followed on a routine basis. These rules include: no driving golf carts on sidewalks, paths, and State Road 10; no children on the golf cart under 36"; a 2025 Permit sticker (this includes driving the golf cart to Town Hall to get new permit); and a valid drivers license to operate the golf cart. For a further rules, please click the following link: Golf Cart Permits/Rules
Update Friday 5/9
Good afternoon. I want to thank JD Castleman for his letter read during last night's Town Council meeting. There is a strong commitment to our trees in Culver. I am excited by the opportunities offered by the IU UGI program and the 100 trees that the Town will be planting in the fall. I would welcome ideas on how to incorporate the community in this planting. JD also raised an interesting point to explore in expanding "street scape" activities under the Tree Commission.
We will be conducting the Town tree removal in the next month. These trees have been identified by the street and Tree Commission as in need of removal. The Ugly Truck Tree Removal service was selected.
The council discussed water and sewer rates during the Thursday 5/8 work session. These rates have not been raised since 2015. Given this fact, the Town hired Baker Tilly to do a rate assessment and recomendations based on our current status. There is a need to raise these rates and the Town Council, Utilities, and Clerk's office are working towards determining the amount of this increase. There will be opportunities to have public dialogue in the upcoming May and June meetings.
I want to remind residents that we are at the start of mowing season. Please make an effort to maintain the Town's ordinance regarding lawn care.
Lastly, I woud like to remind residents that cleanup day will be Monday 5/11. Residents are allowed to place unwanted items on the curb for trash pick up. These items will need to be on the curb on Sunday 5/10 to ensure pick up. Items placed after trash service has passed your residence will be the responsibility of the owner.
Have a great weekend and enjoy the weather!
Update Wednesday 5/7:
Good morning,
Here a few recent updates.
The Town of Culver is committed to promoting the health and safety of our community. As part of this effort, we have accepted a Narcan box from the Marshall County Health Department. Narcan nasal inhalers can reverse the effects of an opioid/ fentanyl overdose when administered quickly and can help prevent opioid/fentanyl overdose deaths. By equipping individuals, families, and community organizations with this critical tool, the Town of Culver hopes to empower our community to respond to emergencies and save lives. The location of the box is the Northeast corner of the Washboard Laundry building located at 120 E. Madison Street. We would like to thank the owners for allowing this lifesaving measure to be placed at their business.

Updates Sunday 5/4:
I want to thank all the individuals who assisted or participated in the filming of the PBS Documentary "Dennis Quaid Viewpoint" on Sunday 5/4. Despite the weather, the crew was able to get great interviews and footage inside the shops as well as selected outdoor areas. They were impressed with our town! The documentary is scheduled to air this fall.
The Town's pier system is on schedule to open on 5/10, and the lift installers will begin this week.
I would like to remind residents of the upcoming Town Council Meeting this Thursday 5/8 at 6:30 PM. There will be a work session prior to the start of the meeting to discuss watr and sewer rates at 5:15 PM.
